The young Belgian ensemble, Musica Gloria, is one of the most exciting ensembles in recent years, which fills its programmes with soloists and works together as a collective. Fitting the motto of the Bach Festival they have created something new for this concert: three cantatas which cast light on different aspects of politics. Criticism of society is demonstrated in BWV 94: “betrayal and false appearance” are depicted in an elegant French dance rhythm. Cantata BWV 131 emphasises its plea for aid in a billowing exchange between the choir and orchestra. It was created in 1708 for Mühlhausen shortly after the town was devastated by a huge fire. The concert ends brilliantly and majestically with cantata BWV 120 which accompanies the installation of the new town council in Leipzig with timpani and trumpets.
