The grand tour, the educational journey to France and Italy, was part of the education of young aristocrats in the 18thCentury. Bach’s prince, Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen, was particularly keen on travel and wrote extensive diaries in the process. Thus, we have his impressions of the great courts and also the concert halls of his time to experience musically in this lecture-concert.
