English-language guided tour of the Bach exhibition

Discover Johann Sebastian Bach's formative years in Arnstadt from a new perspective: the English-language guided tour of the permanent exhibition ‘Audible Faith. Johann Sebastian Bach in Arnstadt’ at the Arnstadt Castle Museum provides impressive insights into the early life and work of the young composer.

Where Princess Elisabeth Albertine and Prince Günther I once resided, the exhibition shows how important Arnstadt was for Bach's artistic development. It was here that he took up his first position as organist, caused a sensation with his artistic song accompaniment – and laid the foundation for his later mastery.

The presentation highlights Bach's family roots in Arnstadt, his work at the New Church and religious life around 1700. A special highlight is the original organ console of the Wender organ from 1703. Visitors can also listen to early musical works from Bach's time in Arnstadt. A separate room is dedicated to the chorale composition ‘Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland’ BWV 659 and, with the aid of visual support and audio samples, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the understanding of the Luther chorale typical of the time.
