Caroline Shaw is multi-talented: she is a singer, violinist, composer and producer – and her work is inordinately successful at all levels. As a singer with her ensemble, Roomful of Teeth, she won a Grammy award and as a producer she has worked with the star rap artist, Kanye West. In 2013 her work Partita won a famous Pulitzer prize. In so doing she was the youngest prize winner and the first ever female composer. Caroline Shaw moves between artistic styles and manages to enthuse a broad audience for her art in the process.
This is also true of Orange, her 2019 declaration of love for the string quartet. Shaw styles herself less as a composer than simply a “musician” and this is evident in her virtuosic cycle which quotes a Bach chorale amongst modern rhythms and harmony. Orange is a composition of musical passion sympathetically interpreted by the Attacca Quartet, one of the leading string quartets in America.
