The chief court conductor of Gotha, Gottfried Heinrich Stoelzel, was not only a successful Leipzig composer but was highly prized by Bach and had his works frequently performed.
His extensive creative works include several passion compositions, including this passion composed in 1727 in Gotha. In this the hour of Jesus’ death is brought to life in a premiere at the location of its creation by the Hungarian Baroque specialists with Gyorgy Vashegyi.
