The Thuringia Bach Festival will follow an ambitious project in the next few years. Composers are invited to write new cantatas – under Bach conditions. Thus, just as Johann Sebastian Bach presented a new cantata every week from 1723 onwards, the composer in residence will write a new cantata within a week from a location within Thuringia for a premiere in an authentic location.
The New York pianist and composer, Uri Caine, will begin. He has worked intensively for many years with modern translations of classical music. His homages to Mahler and Wagner hover on the margins between classical, jazz and contemporary music and have fascinated large audiences – he also enthused audiences at the Thuringia Bach Festival and the Leipzig Bach Festival with his adaptation of the Goldberg Variations.
Now he will submit himself to time pressure for his composition and will surely offer some glimpse into the composer’s workshop in the process.
