V26 | Ensemble 1684

Life means suffering, means being confronted at some point by the end of earthly existence. All religions handle the subject of living and dying at their centre and composers of all periods have treated it musically. J.S. Bach’s “Actus Tragicus” is perhaps the most artistic and affecting example of this. With Bach man can be comforted by the knowledge of Jesus Christ’s suffering as he approaches the end and travel there with “peace and joy”, since in the New Covenant death signals the beginning of eternal life.

This key work of Bach’s is the starting point for a programme devised by the Leipzig Ensemble 1684 – entirely with double meaning since the music by Bach, Schelle and Rosenmuller is some of the most passionate from the German Baroque era.
