The ensemble "Profeti della Quinta“ was founded in Galilee and is now – connected to the renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis – based in Switzerland. The singers around bassist and composer Elam Rotem specialize in music from the Baroque and Renaissance periods, and are dedicated primarily to the rediscovery of Hebrew vocal music - great works that are often very much overshadowed by the popular klezmer tradition in Jewish heritage in this country.
At the center of their work is the composer Salamone Rossi (ca.1570 - ca.1630), who, coming from a Jewish family in Mantua, was for about thirty years in the service of the Gonzaga court in Mantua. Initially his colleague, later his superior there was Claudio Monteverdi. Rossi was highly regarded for his abilities as a violinist and chitarrone player, and his compositional output also focused on instrumental works alongside secular vocal music. Rossi, meanwhile, made musical history with the first polyphonic setting of psalms and other chants in Hebrew.
As part of their residency in Thuringia, Profeti della Quinta will present Salamone Rossi's music in several concerts and combine it in its context with works by Claudio Monteverdi, among others. In addition, the oratorio "Joseph and His Brothers" by Elam Rotem will be heard - a setting of the Hebrew texts in the style of Monteverdi.
