Vikingur Ólafsson
Opening concert 2: Great future

As befits the Festival’s emphasis, the 2019 Thuringia Bach Festival opens with two concerts: it is important to make reference to the present and the future as well as to provide a view of significant history. Vikingur Ólafsson is the ideal artist for this: styled “Iceland’s Glenn Gould” (New York Times) he has a great passion, both for Johann Sebastian Bach and for contemporary music. Vikingur Ólafsson has already premiered six piano concertos as well as numerous solo and chamber music works. His CD recordings of Philip Glass’ piano works were highly praised by the critics, reason enough to include in this concert the highly structured minimal music which references the transparent structure and harmony characteristic of the colourful splendour of the Baroque.
