The great St John Passion re-written as intense chamber music – this is the aim of the musicians from the ambitious Podium Festival Esslingen with their première at the Thuringia Bach Festival. The Evangelist tells the story of Jesus’ suffering but also sings individual arias and choruses while, inspired by original performance practice, the chorales are sung with the audience. The harmony and counterpoint are provided by two groups of instruments which lends the story and the musical essence a more dramatic feel.
This polarising contrast between traditional sounds and unusual arrangement gives the familiar St John Passion a completely new and fresh effect. The interpreters are established masters of their art who tackle ‘their Bach’ with great skill and boundless respect; in searching for innovative concert formats they enable us to open our ears in new ways.
