Cellist Tanja Tetzlaff is the Glenn Gould Bach Fellow 2021-22

She is the first elected artist, who has been chosen for the Fellowship awarded by the City of Weimar. The Glenn Gould Bach Fellowship is generously supported by the Philip Loubser Foundation and managed by the Thuringia Bach Festival. Within her fellowship, Tanja will realise a film project that relates Bach’s famous cello suites to nature and climate change. We look forward to this collaboration!

Cancellation and new programme

With deep regret we have to cancel the upcoming season of the Thuringia Bach Festival. Unfortunately, under the given circumstances, it is neither realistic nor morally responsible to invite audiences to concerts again in just a few weeks, to have artists and our guests travel from near and far. Therefore, the planned concerts will be cancelled on the announced dates. We very much ask for your understanding.

In the meantime, of course we will do our best to be able to offer you outstanding Bach concerts at historic locations in the further course of the year. So we are very pleased to present a new calendar for the a postponed Thuringia Bach Festival in September. You can find all events here on our website - and you can also reserve tickets for these concerts now.

As we do not yet know the requirements for security and distancing in late summer, we have decided to accept only your reservation requests for the time being; regular ticket sales will most likely start later in spring.

Finally, we are also working on alternative offers for April, which can take place live or virtually, depending on the situation of the pandemic. We will publish details of this as soon as we know more about the situation at Easter.

Our festival programme 2021 is now online!

From now on, reservations for events can be made exclusively online here or by phone at +49 (0) 361 37 42 0. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic actual sales will not begin until February 2021, then also in the advance sales and tourist information centres in participating towns.

Hopefully we will all be able to experience unique concerts together again.

New Fellowship for Bach specialists

The Glenn Gould Bach Fellowship honours the name of one of the world's most influential and iconic pianists. Famed for both his legendary performances of Bach and for his ground-breaking engagement with film and recording technology, the Fellowship seeks to emulate and celebrate these same qualities by helping a mature, established artist to recreate the music of the Baroque for the 21st Century. Using the most up-to-date technology, the Glenn Gould Bach Fellow will create over the course of the Fellowship an artistic artefact or series of artefacts that will capture their unique vision. Each two year Fellowship will thus enable an outstanding musician to realise an artistic vision of stature and in the process make a statement about the music of the Baroque that endures. Awarded by the city of Weimar, in collaboration with the Thuringia Bach Festival. Made possible by the Philip Loubser Foundation. -->

BACH | Aria with various modifications BWV 988

32 piano pieces form one of the most famous cycles in the history of music: Bach's famous "Goldberg Variations", according to legend a work commissioned by Count Keyserlingk to entertain him during sleepless nights. In times of the coronavirus many of us are out of the concept of night and day as well, sleep too much or too little - reason enough to give a little musical orientation. Invited by the Thuringia Bach Festival, renowned artists will play one of the variations for you every night: a kaleidoscope of performers and interpretations, as a sign of solidarity in the the international Bach world and with our festival.
