The honorary speeches on his 75th birthday in 2022 once again emphasised the exceptional role which Philippe Herreweghe has played for the world of early music. With the Collegium Vocale Gent, which he founded in 1970, the conductor and psychiatrist has for decades consistently pursued a high interpretational aim which has done much internationally to popularise music from the Renaissance, Baroque and Romantic periods. Bach’s St John Passion has a firm place in his repertoire - for the first time he will conduct it at Bach’s baptismal site in Eisenach.
