Martin Luther

Martin Luther was born on 10 November 1483 in Eisleben. At the age of 15 his parents sent him to the church school in Eisenach. Luther earned his keep as a member of the choir – as did Johann Sebastian Bach 200 years later. In the spring of 1501 he began his studies at the Weiterlesen

Telemann’s Music parlor – Wilhelmsthal castle near Eisenach

Long before Hermann Prince of Pückler-Muskau made the Wilhelmsthal to the highlight of the extraordinary parklands in the western Thuringia forest in the 19th century, the serenades of Georg Philipp Telemann were already singing of its beauty and special atmosphere. At the beginning of the 18th century, Duke Johann Wilhelm of Sachsen-Eisenach had the town that carries Weiterlesen

The Trost Organ in Waltershausen

The Trost Organ in Waltershausen’s Stadtkirche is the largest organ in Thuringia that was built during the time of Bach. Court organ builder Heinrich Gottfried Trost worked on this organ from 1724 to 1730 without ever finishing it. It is probable that Johann Sebastian Bach is connected to the Trost Organ in some way.
Today, this Weiterlesen

Bach with his cousin in Meiningen

Exactly when Johann Sebastian Bach visited his older cousin Johann Ludwig in the idyllic Meiningen is still not known today. Yet he appreciated his works and completed transcriptions of several cantatas and performed them in 1726 in the large churches of Leipzig.
This assistant who performed at the Meiningen court chapel eventually rose to servant-teacher and Weiterlesen

Gotha – The Thuringian Residence

One of the principal sights of Gotha is Schloss Friedenstein, Germany’s largest early Baroque palace, which was built between 1646 and 1654. Figures such as Voltaire, Goethe and Luther spent time in the town, as well as the composer Spohr and Ekhof, the father of German acting. In 1775, Ekhof established the first German court Weiterlesen

Schmalkalden – city of half-timbered houses and the Reformation

Schmalkalden, first mentioned in 874, is often referred to as the city of half-timbered houses and the Reformation. The city gave its name to Martin Luther‘s Smalcald-Articles, among others. The reformer held two sermons in 1537 at the St. George church, which was completed in 1509 and is one of the most beautiful late-gothic hall Weiterlesen

The “Bachs” in Erfurt

There were already musicians by the name of Bach in Erfurt long before the birth of Johann Sebastian. Johannes Bach, the founding father of the Erfurt line of Bachs, was member of the Erfurter Stadtmusicanten-Compagnie and held the post of organist in the Predigerkirche. The town was so convinced of the skill of these musicians Weiterlesen

Bach’s marriage in Dornheim 1707

Thanks to a well-paid position in Mühlhausen and a sum of inheritance from his uncle Tobias Lämmerhirt, Johann Sebastian Bach was able to marry his second cousin Maria Barbara only a few months after beginning his tenure.
Maria Barbara was the daughter of organist Johann Michael Bach and lived with her aunt in Arnstadt after the Weiterlesen

The Weimar years 1708–1717

Bach lived in Weimar for nine years. During these years his church cantatas sounded out for the first time in the “Himmelsburg”, the former chapel of Weimar’s castle. In Weimar, Bach had the reputation for being an organist of unrivalled technique and a composer with a hitherto unrivalled power and boldness of melodic expression. He received requests from every corner of Germany to try out new organs, appoint new organists and of course to work as an organist himself.

Bach’s early mastery 1707–1708

The 22 year-old Bach held his second post as organist in Mühlhausen at the Divi-Blasii-Kirche. This was the start of a very fruitful year. He wrote the cantata “Gott ist mein König” (BWV 71), which was premiered on 4th February 1708 in front of many of the inhabitants of Mühlhausen. This cantata is the only Weiterlesen

With his brother in Ohrdruf 1695–1700

Johann Sebastian lost both his parents at the age of ten and was subsequently taken in by his elder brother Johann Christoph Bach in Ohrdruf. Here he received Lutheran schooling and according to his teachers, was soon conspicuous for his remarkable intelligence.
Johann Sebastian studied Latin, Greek and the sciences and received five hours of music Weiterlesen

The beginnings of Bach’s composer career 1703–1707

Arnstadt, the oldest town in Thuringia, has very close ties with the Bach musicians family. In Arnstadt alone, 17 “Bachs” were born and eight were married. In the summer of 1703, a new organ was ready to be inaugurated in the Neukirche and the town invited the 18 year-old Johann Sebastian Bach to inspect the Weiterlesen

Childhood in Eisenach 1685–1695

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on 21st March 1685 in Eisenach and lived here until the age of ten. He was baptised in the Georgenkirche at the baptismal font that can still be visited today, and like Martin Luther, he visited the grammar school in the old Dominican monastery. The young Johann Sebastian had much Weiterlesen

Bachland-Tour through Eisenach

Rich as Eisenach is with traditions and history, for lovers of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach the town with its 41,000 inhabitants is the be-all and end-all, since Eisenach is the place where the great composer was born. This is where it all began. In contrast to the tours of Weimar and Arnstadt, where Weiterlesen

Bachland-Tour through Arnstadt

Bach and Arnstadt, that is a great passion. The young composer arrived in the town in the summer of 1703 at the age of 18 to start his first post as organist. He must have left behind a great impression when four weeks before he made his first visit to the town on the river Weiterlesen

Bachland-Citytour through Erfurt

Bach in Erfurt is an unusual story. It is true that Johann Sebastian Bach often visited the town in his youth but he left few traces behind him that are visible today. As a footnote, the great composer would have been born in Erfurt had not Duke Johann Georg 1 of Sachsen-Eisenach turned down Johann Weiterlesen

Bachland-Tour through Weimar

A tour following in Bach’s footsteps should start on the spot where Johann Sebastian Bach looks down on Weimar’s many visitors in a very personal and rather lofty manner: since 1995 a bronze bust of the famous composer has stood opposite the Franz Liszt Music School, in front of which Bach’s birth is traditionally commemorated Weiterlesen
