Bach and sons – tradition and modern

Works by Johann Sebastian, Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach

The gamba player, Juliane Laake, from Potsdam studied with Hille Perl and Philippe Pierlot. In her programme she contrives musical encounters between Johann Sebastian Bach and two sons from his first marriage. On the one hand there is Carl Philipp Emanuel, a chamber harpsichordist to the later Prussian King, Friedrich II, and longstanding church music director in Hamburg. On the other hand is the fallible Willhelm Friedemann, inclined towards wayward behaviour in both his professional life and his compositions – both original geniuses who encounter their father in varied forms with their works.
